Yulia Tymoshenko: Approval Of The 2009 State Budget Will Be A Sign Of Stability

Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko believes that the Verkhovna Rada’s approval on Friday of the state budget for 2009 will allow Ukraine to overcome the consequences of the global financial crisis.

She said this during the Cabinet meeting on Saturday.

“Despite the difficult political conditions and destructive work of certain politicians, the budget was approved in the format proposed by the government,” Tymoshenko noted.

Government outlines five priority tasks

The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine outlined five top-priority tasks for short-time perspective to stabilize the economic situation in Ukraine.

According to an UNIAN correspondent, Prime Minister of Ukraine Yulia Tymoshenko said this addressing parliament on Tuesday.

In particular, these tasks are: to create conditions for overcoming the crisis and post-crisis consequences; to lift restrictions of infrastructure development; to increase technological level of industry; to develop a modern agricultural-industrial complex, and to continue integration with the international community.
“At present, challenges for the Ukrainian economics fall in two categories: to overcome the crisis, and then to achieve a stable development”, Yulia Tymoshenko said.

Yulia Tymoshenko: The World Bank loan will balance the 2008 State Budget

The World Bank development policy loan to Ukraine amounting to USD 500mln is an essential step for balancing the State Budget of Ukraine by the end of the current year. This was announced by Prime Minister of Ukraine Yulia Tymoshenko at the Government’s sitting today.

Government approved program of its activities during crisis and post-crisis period

The Cabinet of Ministers approved the program of its activities during the crisis and post-crisis period at an extraordinary meeting on Saturday.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko said at a briefing that on Monday, this program, along with the draft national budget for 2009, will be submitted for consideration by the parliament. The prime minister expressed hope that the Verkhovna Rada would consider and pass the country's main financial document on Thursday, December 25.

Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko met with Nino Burjanadze - former Speaker of the Georgian Parliament and leader of the Democratic Movement–United Georgia Party.

Burjanadze stopped in Ukraine on her way to the US. She made a special speech at an international conference in Kyiv. 
 
From Kyiv she will fly to Washington, DC for meetings with representatives of international organizations and government circles.  Her US visit will last until December 22.

Unblocked Parliament Passes Anti-crisis Measures

Yesterday, representatives of the three blocs that comprise the recently announced Coalition of National Development, Stability and Order signed an official coalition agreement. This rubber stamps the formation of the democratic coalition, announced last week in the wake of Volodymyr Lytvyn’s appointment as Chairman (speaker) of Ukraine’s parliament. Ukraine should strength role of euro, says Deputy Prime Minister Nemyria

It is necessary to strengthen the role of the euro in Ukraine, Deputy Premier Hryhoriy Nemyria told journalists in Kyiv on Tuesday.

According to him, this is because Ukraine would become a member of the European Union in the future, and the euro is the EU currency.

Nemyria noted that during the financial crisis, those EU countries that are yet to switch to the euro, stepped up their work in that direction.

He gave the examples of Poland and Hungary, and also Iceland, which is not a member of the EU and now is to quicken the process of joining this organization.

"At this point, it is a strategic time to make a choice favoring the euro," he said, adding that Ukraine is the only state in the region, that links its currency to the U.S. dollar.
