The government has approved Ukraine’s letter of cooperation with the International Monetary Fund, Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko said during a press conference yesterday.

Tymoshenko noted that this document will allow Ukraine to obtain money that will help keep the hryvnia stable: “This is the goal of cooperating with the IMF, to ensure stability of the national currency during this difficult time, with the help of money from the IMF.”

According to Tymoshenko, based on the results of talks with the IMF, Ukraine plans to receive $3.2 billion through the third tranche of its loan: “This tranche, I can say without any doubt, will ensure the stability of the Ukrainian currency.”

The prime minister also informed that the government hasn’t asked the IMF to increase the amount of the third tranche: “From the very beginning the amount of the third tranche was going to be $3.2 billion, that’s why no talks are being held on increasing it.”

Moreover, Tymoshenko noted that the representatives of the IMF mission currently in Ukraine have decided to not make any public statements prior to the completion of talks and signing of necessary documents: “In my opinion, negotiations between the government, NBU and IMF are moving along successfully and should end just as successfully.”

Tymoshenko called on the president to not complicate talks with new obligations for Ukraine: “I would like for the Ukrainian national leadership team to work unanimously and in a coordinated fashion. I am doing everything I can for there to be such coordinated work between the branches of power in Ukraine.”

Tymoshenko reminded that the letter should be singed by the prime minister, finance minister, chairman of the National Bank, and at his will, the president.

In addition, Tymoshenko informed that the inflation forecast for 2009 was reduced in the letter of intent to the IMF: “The current forecast is for 10-13% inflation. Today we’re doing everything to curb inflation in Ukraine.”
