Experts say that the Yulia Tymoshenko government has managed to keep the socio-economic situation at bay and on a stable level despite the financial crisis.
"Analysis of the anti-crisis policy of Ukraine demonstrates that government has during the year made decisions and succeeded with anti-crisis measures, which overall were logical and directed at anti-crisis actions in our country," the director of the Institute for Economic Research and Policy Consulting, Ihor Burakovsky, said during a roundtable discussion in Kyiv on "Socio-Economic Results of 2009."

According to the expert, government has implemented
measures which helped "soften crisis manifestations
for certain economic sectors and strata of society.
In particular, [the government] managed to buttress
the social sphere despite all of the present
problems. The social sphere is the most legally
protected…Taking into account the specific gravity
of protected budget items, reduction in budget
expenditures, as was successfully done in other
countries, didn’t happen in Ukraine."
The economist also emphasized that "over the course of the year, the government in fact worked as a minority in spite of a parliamentary coalition, because throughout the year the government had to react to opposition from the National Bank of Ukraine. Thus, we have been witnesses to constant opposition of institutions of power."
During the roundtable, political analyst Ihor Zhdanov also voiced certainty that "in spite of the apocalyptic scenarios at the beginning of the year that the country won’t have money to pay salaries and pensions, the government managed to hold on to the socio-economic situation."
